Ventura County's economy once depended primarily on oil and agriculture for employment and property taxes, and for years they were almost all that were needed. Today, the economic base is much more broad, even though agriculture is still a major contributor. Aside from federal, state and local government, the largest employers are in biotechnology, health insurance, telephone services and equipment, mortgage lending, education, and duplicating and packaging videocassettes The Highway 101 corridor is attracting many high-technology industries, the Port of Hueneme is unloading cars and bananas from ships and sending citrus and other products overseas, and the Navy has an important presence at Point Mugu and Port Hueneme.
